One large envelope with removable phonograph record, overall: 11 3/4 in. x 7 3/16 in. x 3/4 in. (29.8 cm x 18.3 cm x 1.9 cm)

One of the last pieces the artist produced before his death in October 1968, Duchamp’s Contrapetrie reprises the spinning word-play discs from his 1923 masterpiece Anemic Cinema. The quasi-alliterative phrase inscribed on the front of this record can be roughly translated, “We dodge the bruises of the Eskimos in exquisite words.” The record itself captures Duchamp reading many such enigmatic phrases.
